Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
