European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
