RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, shows how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces executed what it described as a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
