A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The official reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in national works. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party urged an urgent halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
